MIRLAB Logo Redesign (2020)

SKILLS

As per their page, the Multimedia Information Resource Laboratory (MIRLab) is the video production unit of the Ateneo Association of Communication Majors (ACOMM). In 2020, I was tasked to redesign their logo to make it fit their needs and objectives as a production arm better.

The main imagery of MIRLab's logo showcases a camera that doubles as a satellite. Like satellites--which orbits and transverses the outside of the earth to gather information--MIRLab and its members too, aim to do the same by producing meaningful productions and documentaries. Through their productions, they aim to look at things through different perspectives which they would not normally see if they stayed within the same bubble.

Above is the original iteration of the logo, which MIRLab had been using since the beginning. For the redesign, MIRLab requested that more variations of the logo be created, because at the time, only the version at the right was available. More importantly, they wanted a logo that possessed the same visuals and 'feel' as those of established production companies and houses.

As such, the following changes were applied. The camera-satellite was retained to keep the original imagery of MIRLab, but this time, the perspective looks as though the viewer is standing behind the camera, operating and gathering the information themselves. The three stars were also arranged and organized better, and retained to accentuate the setting as outer space. It also aims to represent the three departments of MIRLab: Research and Development, Studio, and Post Production.
